Painting & Colour Matching

These pictures show two 80ft Americas Cup boats which were refitted at Port Solent in the Summer of 2008. They were commissioned by a large Mexican luxury hotel under the design of Ron Holland, the yacht designer of amongst others, Mirabella fame. After liaison with Ron and the owners, the boats were resprayed in Jet black with silver stripes. The masts, all 115 foot of them, and booms were resprayed in white.
The boats also had winches serviced and replaced, antifouled, vangs replaced and various other items were serviced or repaired as necessary. Many of the electrics were replaced to include new battery chargers, batteries and engineering was undertaken to bring the vessels up to a serviceable condition, with a raft of spares for future use carefully labelled and boxed. We also designed and created a complete new heads with supporting bulkheads in each boat to accommodate them for their newlife on the Pacific. These boats were sea commissioned by GBR to include launch, the running of systems, creation of fender blankets and fenders to the liaison with transport Company to include refurbishment of cradles and shrink wrapping.

Gel Coat is three dimensional, even when dry. It has visual depth and its colour can change throughout those depths, Getting colours matched seamlessly is one of the skills of which we are most proud, and we do it by eye ! If the Gel has gone past a certain point it may require re-gelling again a speciality of the yard. However, at this point the cost may outweigh the value to you and your contact at GBR will be pleased to recommend other options also. It may prove more economical to paint. Of course if the boat is already painted then in our modern clean facility we undertake painting jobs on a very regular basis, with results that quite literally transform. As ever quality of materials and workmanship is the key to our reputation. We are an approved painting centre for AwlGrip, Blakes and International (Cortaulds) Paint. This is a Westerley 34 being resprayed in our shed at Port Solent.

Teak decks

Nothing beats the appearance of a well laid teak deck. Of course there are many out there that aren’t, look out especially for teak veneers and curling edges. A GBR teak deck is based on 3/8ths or 5/8ths solid teak which can be sanded down over the years to maintain appearance and performance. Our shipwrights lay the finest Burmese teak, first shaping and dry laying then laid down using the strongest fixing materials. The shipwrights’ signature king plank is an option that most owners enjoy and adds that wonderful attention to detail that sets our workmanship aside. As with all areas of GBR work – we insist on the finest quality, but you will find our prices are less than you were expecting.

Classic Boat Restoration / Refurbishment - Lady of The Sea

One of only four of it’s type in the world she was sadly showing her age – failing joinery added to countless years of neglect and a dark oppressive interior, with poor layout which did not suit the original owner’s new tastes. Our team of craftsmen first lifted the worn teak decking, stripped out the failing marine ply deck and damaged structural members, the old interior, engine, electronics and plumbing. The engine was renewed, electronics and plumbing replaced. Structural timber was replaced to meet the exacting standards of the structural engineer. The new teak interior and navigation station were installed and the deck floor replaced. A new teak deck, upgraded rigging, deck gear, full respray, osmosis treatment, new internal and external upholstery and the installation of a bow thruster completed the refit. Also, individual sailing was required and a system of electric and standard winches were fitted. A beautiful classic, turned out in much the same condition as the day she was originally launched, customised to suit a new era.
